Total Data Quality – Just What the Doctor Ordered

The Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) faced a fragmented, manual process for managing its Continuing Health Professional Education (CHPE) program—multiple Microsoft SQL Server applications, Access databases and paper-based workflows made scheduling, registrations and transcript management slow and error-prone. To consolidate and automate CHPE administration, NOSM engaged a solution that included Melissa (Melissa Data)’s Data Quality Components for SSIS (DQC) to address pervasive data quality and duplication issues across departmental sources.

A custom application (Ironspeed front end, Microsoft SQL Server backend, SSIS for integration) used Melissa’s DQC within SSIS to profile, parse, cleanse, match and validate records. For example, DQC merged six disparate sources (Access, Excel, flat files, Novell Groupwise), validating emails and deduplicating an initial 50,000 records down to 6,000 corrected distinct records while identifying 3,500 invalid emails for manual correction; ultimately about 30 source systems were cleansed and centralized into an automated CHPE system—saving NOSM substantial time and costs.
