Symmetry Determines Proper Tax Withholding Using Rooftop Geocoding

Symmetry Software, a payroll software firm, faced a critical challenge: determining correct payroll withholding taxes requires extreme address accuracy down to the rooftop level so tax jurisdictions aren’t misassigned. After unsatisfactory geocoding from Google and Bing, Symmetry turned to Melissa, implementing Melissa’s Data Quality Suite and GeoCoder with GeoPoints to verify, correct and standardize residence and work addresses for its Payroll Point product.

Melissa’s GeoCoder/GeoPoints and Data Quality Suite APIs (using multi-sourced conflation) provided rooftop-level geocoding for about 95% of U.S. addresses (over 121.8M delivery points). The three-month integration delivered measurable results: significantly improved rooftop accuracy, higher reliability and virtually eliminated latency, more matches with fewer false positives, and dozens of error/result codes that became feature upgrades—enabling Symmetry to assign withholding tax jurisdictions more precisely and offer customers a noticeably better Payroll Point service.
