City of Tempe Utilizes Address Validation Tool to Build Data Warehouse

The City of Tempe, Arizona, which sends thousands of pieces of mail weekly, faced inconsistent and incomplete address data across multiple departmental systems, causing misspellings, wrong ZIP Codes and non‑CASS‑compliant mailings. To cleanse and standardize addresses for a new data warehouse, The City of Tempe worked with vendor Melissa and adopted Melissa’s Address Object address‑validation toolkit.

Melissa integrated Address Object into the city’s custom ETL and applications to validate addresses in batch and at point‑of‑entry, appending USPS CASS‑certified postal codes. As a result, The City of Tempe achieved consistent, standardized addresses for logical integrity in the data warehouse, enabled relationships across disparate systems, reduced undeliverable mail and postage waste, and positioned the city to perform spatial analysis through EGIS integration.
