CMS reduces underground inspection travel time with Matterport for 100m-deep HL-CMS upgrades

The customer, CMS, which operates a massive particle detector at CERN, faced significant challenges in visualizing and managing its complex underground facilities for a major upgrade project. The logistical difficulties included planning around residual radiation, limited space for access, and coordinating numerous technical teams and contractors. To address this, CMS adopted Matterport's 3D digital twin technology to improve infrastructure management.

Matterport's solution provided an immersive digital twin of the facility, which was integrated with the existing Catia design software. This implementation improved planning efficiency by reducing the need for physical inspections, saving considerable travel time. It enhanced collaboration and reduced errors during project design and execution. Furthermore, the digital twin helped optimize on-site work to reduce potential radiation exposure for personnel.
