Klarna, a global e‑commerce bank that gives consumers flexibility to buy now and pay later, needed a way to simplify and secure online checkout while enabling in‑app purchases at any merchant. To achieve fast, real‑time payment authorization and flexible funding, Klarna partnered with Marqeta and used Marqeta’s card‑issuing platform — including instant virtual (Ghost) cards and Just‑in‑Time (JIT) Funding delivered via open APIs.

Marqeta implemented its modern, scalable platform and open APIs so Klarna could issue virtual Ghost Cards in real time, control authorization with JIT Funding, and launch a large U.S. pilot in weeks (followed by Australia). The result: growing consumer adoption of Ghost Cards, Klarna’s transaction volume has approximately doubled every quarter since early 2019, and Klarna benefits from Marqeta’s 99.99% reliability and developer‑friendly APIs.
