Unlocking the Value of Content at Elsevier

Elsevier, a leading publisher of scientific, medical and academic content, faced the challenge of making an enormous and growing body of unstructured information usable and timely for users. Content lived in many separate databases and formats (millions of articles, tens of millions of citations, books and pamphlets), so building new, finely targeted applications was slow, costly and unable to deliver the granular search results clinicians and researchers needed at the point of care.

Elsevier adopted MarkLogic Server to consolidate and ingest content “as is” into a central XML contentbase and use XQuery-powered, element-level search to assemble and deliver precisely the passages users need. The platform enabled rapid application development (a working app for 20 textbooks in about a week), eliminated extensive schema preparation, supported multi-terabyte scale, and accelerated time-to-availability while cutting content-prep and development effort—helping users find answers 5–9× faster and reducing costs while improving clinical and research outcomes.
