How one IDN ramped up surgical capacity with 89% virtual pre-operative care

Kaiser Permanente needed to safely ramp up elective surgery while minimizing face-to-face contact, unnecessary tests, and administrative burden on pre-operative teams. To reduce in-person pre-anesthesia visits, improve visibility of the patient journey, and optimize clinic capacity, Kaiser Permanente engaged Lumeon to deploy its virtual care solution for surgery (the Lumeon platform / programmable pathway engine).

Lumeon virtualized Kaiser Permanente’s pre-op protocols—integrating with their Epic EHR—and automated digital pre-anesthesia questionnaires, risk-based engagement, communications, tasking and test-ordering. The Lumeon solution fast-tracked 89% of patients into surgery with no on-site visit (51% fully digital, 38% needing nurse calls), achieved >90% engagement, increased pre-operative team capacity by 60%, cut in-person prep to 11%, and reduced unnecessary testing (only 27% required labs/EKG).
