Ameelio Tackles Criminal Justice Reform Through Direct Mail

Ameelio is a non‑profit startup building a free web and mobile app to help families communicate with incarcerated loved ones. Faced with exploitative telecom costs, confusing facility mailing rules and tricky address formats, Ameelio needed a way to remove cost and friction from sending letters—so they turned to Lob, using Lob’s Address Verification API and webhook/printing services to handle address standardization, printing and delivery tracking.

Using Lob’s APIs, Ameelio standardized a database of over 1,800 prison addresses, integrated Lob’s webhook in under a day, and launched an MVP in less than a month without building print/postage infrastructure. The Lob integration enabled delivery visibility and eliminated the overhead of print-and-mail, and the app saw rapid adoption—300 letters sent and over 360 users in the first week, with 88% of users successfully adding a contact—while generating data to study mail acceptance and potential impacts on recidivism.
