SUNY Upstate Medical University Increased Weekly OR Case Volume by 3.4%

SUNY Upstate Medical University, the only academic medical center in Central New York, was dealing with a shortage of available operating room (OR) time and utilization rates below leadership targets. Conflicting reports and a lack of actionable, objective data prevented department chairs and surgical services from standardizing policies and making unified decisions on block allocation, release times and operational improvements. To address this, SUNY Upstate engaged LeanTaaS and adopted iQueue for Operating Rooms as a single source of truth.

LeanTaaS implemented iQueue for Operating Rooms across Upstate’s Downtown and Community Hospitals, introduced a Collectable Time–focused utilization framework, and helped update block and robotic-time policies. In the first quarter post-launch Upstate achieved a 3.4% increase in weekly case volume, a 5.5% increase in OR minutes used during business hours, +2% prime-time utilization, +1% staffed-room utilization, and improved release proactivity from 2 to 12 days (a 10-day increase), enabling more efficient patient access to the OR.
