A LeanTaaS Case Study
Gundersen Health System, a regional health system serving Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa, faced perioperative capacity and staffing challenges in 2022 that hindered efficient use of OR time. Leaders lacked real-time visibility into block utilization, autorelease deadlines were too short, surgeons were reluctant to manually release time, and scheduling relied on laborious calls and faxes with no audit trail—limiting elective case access and use of resources like surgical robotics.
To address this, Gundersen deployed LeanTaaS’s AI-based iQueue for Operating Rooms in May 2022. iQueue’s Analyze, Collect, and Allocate modules gave a single source of truth, automated notifications and release reminders, rightsizing recommendations, and an open marketplace to repurpose unused blocks, streamlining scheduling workflows. As a result, Gundersen saw measurable Q4 2022 vs Q4 2021 improvements: +8% prime time utilization, +9% staffed room utilization, +8% block utilization, +14% prime time robot utilization, and a 76% increase in manually released minutes.
