Seneca Ict Students in Tune With the Real World

Seneca College’s School of ICT, one of Canada’s largest post-secondary IT programs, faced the challenge of preparing graduates for the real world where employers still rely on mature IBM i (AS/400) systems alongside modern technologies. Faculty wanted a way to teach students how to assess, modernize and extend existing applications so they could be immediately productive in mixed legacy/modern environments.

The department introduced a Mobile App Development for IBM i elective (MAP525) using LANSA LongRange and RPG, letting students build real mobile extensions to existing systems without learning native mobile languages. Students produced working apps (for example, payroll contact and photo management), presented at industry user groups, won awards and even secured on-the-spot interviews—demonstrating stronger job readiness and popularity with employers.
