Portable Lansa Solution Opens Up New Markets

Ficosnet (now part of Choice Grupo) needed to modernize and expand Ficos Open, its financial package that had evolved as an RPG-based AS/400 system. The legacy application was functionally complete but hard to maintain and unattractive, and customers wanted an open, portable solution so they wouldn’t feel locked into the IBM i platform. Ficosnet also wanted to avoid maintaining multiple platform versions and to deliver a new product quickly.

They chose LANSA to maintain a single-source codebase and deploy across platforms. Server logic was built in LANSA’s 4GL with a LANSA Open/Visual Basic client and extensive use of the LANSA Repository for validations, triggers and impact analysis. Within 18 months they produced a convertible release; today Ficos Open runs on AS/400, Windows/SQL Server and Oracle, serves 55 customers (including major brands), supports multiple languages, boosted sales by opening new markets, and delivered measurable customer ROI (for example, Bacardi recouped its investment within months).
