A LANSA Case Study
Hayhurst Elias Dudek Inc. (HED), one of Canada’s largest privately owned insurance brokers and parent of Pet Plan, was struggling with a 20-year RPG-based green‑screen system (InLib) that made data entry and enquiries slow, complicated staff training, and forced developers to run nearly all reports. High call‑center volumes and turnover amplified the problem, and HED needed an event‑driven, graphical front end that could open multiple windows, support flexible Q&A with clients, and let business users run their own queries.
HED rebuilt its Pet Plan and Life & Health front ends using Visual LANSA, leveraging rapid graphical prototyping and easy integration with the existing iSeries back end. Developers became productive in weeks, LANSA Client enabled on‑demand reporting and printing, and training time fell from roughly three weeks to three five‑hour sessions. The result: faster claim and policy processing, shorter calls, improved marketing and sales reporting, quicker time‑to‑revenue for new hires, and stronger competitive wins while preserving two decades of business logic.
