A LANSA Case Study
Becton, Dickinson and Company (BD) is a global medical technology firm that needed to unify disparate systems across Europe and worldwide to achieve an “Extended Enterprise.” BD’s landscape included a LANSA-based iSeries sales and distribution system in Europe, SAP on Sun Solaris globally, a Broadvision eBusiness platform, and trading partners on GHX, Ariba and other procurement systems. The challenge was to exchange real-time transactions, centralize business logic and automate logistics so orders could be entered once and processed across all systems.
BD implemented LANSA Integrator together with WebMethods to transform and route XML transactions between platforms, using LANSA as the core distribution “glue” and repository for business logic. The integration enabled one-step XML mapping and real-time order processing and confirmations, automated warehouse picking (including robotic cranes), and SAP replenishment via IDOC/EDI. The result was faster, more efficient end-to-end order handling, immediate order-status visibility, broader eBusiness reach into emerging markets and the ability to accept multiple order channels while reusing validated business rules across front ends.
