Apria Uses Lansa Two-way Xml to Integrate Heterogeneous Business Systems

Apria Healthcare, a leading US provider of home healthcare products and services with over 9,500 staff and 370 branches, needed a fast, reliable way to communicate with a wide range of external partners and an externally hosted eCommerce site. The challenge was integrating heterogeneous systems (HP9000, iSeries, NT, Unix, mainframes) and supporting two‑way, low‑latency transactions without rebuilding existing back-end applications or relying on complex EDI formats.

Using LANSA Integrator with MQ Series, Apria built the Apria Commerce Engine (ACE), an XML plug‑in connection engine that converts varied message formats to XML, routes and parses them into DB2, and converts outbound messages to required formats. ACE enabled insurance eligibility checks, credit card processing and web ordering (internal and hosted), delivered thousands of transactions per day, reduced phone calls and costs, sped implementation of new formats (including HIPAA), and let Apria extend services without changing core systems.
