Interactive and Effective Online Student Presentations with Kritik

The University at Buffalo's Dr. Alexis Thompson faced the challenge of maintaining effective student presentations and developing critical communication skills after transitioning to online teaching. She needed a solution that could engage students remotely and move beyond the anxiety and disengagement common with traditional in-class presentations. To address this, she turned to the peer assessment platform Kritik.

Using Kritik, Dr. Thompson implemented a system where students presented via Zoom and then evaluated each other using detailed custom rubrics. This process honed their skills as both presenters and critical evaluators. The solution was highly effective; students received abundant peer feedback to refine their skills, and Dr. Thompson could guide their evaluative abilities by overriding grades and providing class-wide feedback. Kritik enabled her to successfully deliver her learning objectives across multiple courses, including a summer program in Singapore, resulting in more engaged students and improved outcomes.
