How does Peer Assessment help Students become Better Writers

Brock University Assistant Professor Dr. Erin Panda sought a more effective way to develop her students' writing skills and facilitate deeper engagement with course material. The challenge was moving beyond a focus on final grades for term papers to a process that provided continuous, developmental feedback, a task made difficult by the time constraints inherent in teaching.

Kritik provided a platform for peer assessment using pre-made rubrics, which clarified expectations and trained students to evaluate work against objectives. This solution enabled a scaffolded writing process where students received personalized feedback from the idea stage to the final product, fostering essential writing skills without increasing the professor's grading workload. As a result, Dr. Panda's students became better writers, and the tool proved scalable and effective for both small and large classes of up to 300 students.
