A Kraken Case Study
Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) faced the challenge of rising and increasingly complex electricity demand, driven by electrification and distributed energy resources (DERs) like EVs. This was outpacing network capacity and risking the need for billions in costly grid infrastructure upgrades. To address this, SSEN partnered with vendor Kraken to explore its grid management platform.
Kraken implemented a pilot using dynamic distribution grid pricing to manage demand. The solution used Kraken's technology to forecast grid congestion and create a day-ahead dynamic tariff, which was passed to EV owners to incentivize charging at times that benefited the grid. The trial projected significant results, including the potential to defer CAPEX infrastructure upgrades for over 10 years, achieve a 25% peak load reduction, and generate cost savings of £1 billion, demonstrating Kraken's platform can maximize existing grid capacity.
