Jagex Increases Subscribers and Credit Card Revenue with Kount

Jagex, the UK-based developer of RuneScape and other free-to-play online games, faced persistent fraud from “gold farmers” using stolen cards to buy memberships and sell virtual currency. Their in-house fraud system couldn’t keep up with evolving attacks, produced high decline rates, and tied up development resources, so the fraud team sought an external, more flexible solution.

After evaluating vendors, Jagex implemented Kount (about two weeks to integrate) and used its custom rule-writing and scoring to rapidly respond to new tactics. The result: rejection rates fell by 50% with no rise in fraud, chargebacks remained around 0.2%, membership conversion rose 3–4%, and disabling front-end screening (3D Secure) saved hundreds of thousands of pounds—translating to roughly 1% more net card revenue annually.
