How Truth Initiative’s Khoros-powered EX Community is encouraging people of all ages to quit nicotine and tobacco

Truth Initiative, America’s largest nonprofit public health organization focused on ending tobacco and nicotine addiction, faced the challenge of providing anonymous, 24/7 peer support to help people quit smoking and vaping across ages and backgrounds. To scale and modernize its long‑running EX Community, Truth Initiative partnered with Khoros to power the EX Community on the Khoros Communities platform, enabling rapid peer-to-peer connection and tailored digital cessation support.

Using Khoros, Truth Initiative implemented features like Conversations, Daily Pledge, Groups, custom search and partner content integration (Mayo Clinic) to drive engagement and timely support; posts average 12 comments with replies often within 12 minutes. Khoros‑powered EX helped 4,268 adults (25+) register after referral from This is Quitting, with 20% joining the EX Community and 13% of those actively engaging—while Truth Initiative’s research shows community visitors are more than twice as likely to quit than non‑visitors.
