How SANE Australia Built the Country’s Only 24/7 Peer-Support Community

SANE Australia, a national mental health charity serving people with complex mental health issues, needed a safe, always‑on peer support space that met strict duty‑of‑care, privacy, and legal requirements. After ruling out public social networks, SANE partnered with Khoros in 2014 to build a purpose‑built community using Khoros Communities that would allow controlled moderation, custom safety features, and compliance with their therapeutic framework.

Khoros implemented a scalable, moderated forum with 24/7 monitoring, built‑in safety and admin tools, and syndication to roughly 75 partner websites so SANE could reach more people without fragmenting moderation. The community handles about 3,000 posts per week, maintains a 60‑minute response goal, gains ~195 new members weekly with a 21% weekly return rate, and during COVID saw engagement rise 55% and membership grow 400%—all delivered via the Khoros platform.
