Proper load balancing ensures uninterrupted viewing of championship rugby game

RTÉ, Ireland’s national public-service broadcaster, needed to scale RTÉ Player to handle large spikes in live sport viewing — tens of thousands of concurrent streams during events like the Six Nations final — while replacing legacy load balancers that risked bottlenecks and service disruption. RTÉ selected KEMP Technologies and deployed KEMP’s LoadMaster 5300 hardware load balancers and VLM 1000 virtual load masters to meet requirements for high throughput, high availability and simpler management.

KEMP Technologies installed four LoadMaster 5300 appliances (multiple 10GbE ports, up to 8.8 Gbps and support for over 400,000 concurrent connections) in dual high‑availability pairs and four VLM 1000s for test/dev. The deployment delivered seamless traffic distribution, automatic failover and centralized management, enabling uninterrupted live streaming of the rugby final, 99.99% availability and the capacity and manageability RTÉ needs to support RTÉ Player’s rapid growth.
