A KEMP Technologies Case Study

Kemp helps Deltion College lead the way in Software Defined Networks

Deltion College, a Dutch education centre in Zwolle with more than 15,000 students and 1,200 staff, needed to replace its legacy Cisco network and deploy the first European Software Defined Network (SDN) to deliver high-availability Microsoft services (SharePoint, Lync, Exchange) and stronger protection against hacking and Denial of Service attacks. Working with HP, Deltion chose KEMP Technologies and deployed LM5400 appliances and the KEMP Edge Security Pack (ESP) to provide adaptive load balancing and secure publishing of internet-facing applications.

KEMP Technologies integrated its SDN Adaptive load balancing with the HP VAN Controller, allowing Deltion to retain two KEMP 2600 LoadMasters and add two KEMP 5400 units to steer traffic across roughly 250 Microsoft Hyper-V servers; Lync load balancing went live first, followed by SharePoint and Exchange. The KEMP solution delivered seamless integration, increased availability and resilience for students and staff, enhanced edge security via ESP (replacing Microsoft TMG), and measurable operational benefits including 24x7 service protection, automation-driven OpEx savings and improved application delivery.
