Canal+ boosts engagement by 18% with personalized video recommendations

Canal+ (canalplus.fr), the French pay-TV broadcaster expanding its online presence, wanted to boost visitor retention and the number of videos watched by improving the relevance of its “+ de vidéos” (More videos) section. Historically the site showed the same editor-selected videos to all users, so Canal+ A/B tested whether personalized, navigation-based recommendations would better engage visitors on two high-traffic show pages, “Zapping” and “Petit Journal.”

Using Kameleoon, Canal+ ran a quick A/B test (implemented in one day) comparing editorial recommendations to personalized content for ~850,000 desktop visitors. The personalized variant increased click rate on “More videos” by 18% on Zapping (6% on Petit Journal), improved visitor retention and navigation, and led to more pages viewed per visit—demonstrating users prefer recommendations based on their browsing behavior over static editorial picks.
