A Jira Software Case Study
The Met Office, the UK’s national weather service with about 2,000 staff and global operations, partnered with NOAA to launch the Space Weather app in 2014 — a pioneering service that forecasts upper-atmosphere conditions that can disrupt navigation, mobile networks and GPS. To deliver this mission-critical software and manage contributions from internal teams and external suppliers, the Met Office needed a robust version control and configuration management solution.
The team adopted Git with Bitbucket and used Jira to manage agile sprints, supported by Atlassian partner Clearvision for training and health checks. Bitbucket established a clear branching and merging workflow, improved collaboration and backups, and reduced configuration-management support costs by 75%, while Jira provided remote visibility into backlogs and work — enabling faster delivery and plans to roll out Git/Bitbucket across all projects.
