Case Study: NEPTUNE Canada achieves scalable, transparent ocean-observatory operations and streamlined issue tracking with Jira Software

A Jira Software Case Study

Preview of the Neptune Canada Case Study

Ocean Science Project uses Atlassian’s Bug Tracker & Knowledge Management Tool

NEPTUNE Canada, based at the University of Victoria, runs a regional-scale underwater observatory off Vancouver Island that streams live seafloor data to scientists worldwide. The project needed a scalable way to manage software and instrumentation issues, coordinate dozens of internal staff and hundreds of external researchers, provide public and private collaborative spaces, integrate with an in-house data system (DMAS), and reduce email/version-control chaos while supporting single sign-on.

They replaced Bugzilla with Jira for flexible workflows and issue tracking and adopted Confluence for knowledge management and user-contributed content, integrating LDAP/CAS single sign-on and planning DMAS links. The outcome was clearer agile processes, transparent action-item tracking across 13 Jira projects and hundreds of Confluence users, robust document versioning, reduced email overhead, and improved collaboration and outreach for researchers.
