NASA’s Ames Research Center migrates to Git and takes off with Atlassian

Ames Research Center, a leading NASA research facility, faced a challenge supporting 150 software and aeronautical engineers working on the safety-critical NextGen air-traffic project. The team needed a secure, manageable Git-based workflow that complied with NASA development and testing processes, but out-of-the-box Git lacked the enterprise control and traceability required for their environment.

Ames adopted Atlassian’s suite—Bitbucket, Jira, Crucible, Fisheye, and Confluence—providing integrated browser-based navigation between issues and code, strict authentication for remote work, and in-place code review and history viewing. With help from partner Go2Group to migrate decades of change history, the installation grew to about 40 projects and 200 repositories; within two months the team reported faster development cycles, better code quality, simplified reviews, and improved traceability and project visibility via Jira dashboards.
