Case Study: Mercy Ships achieves faster incident response and streamlined shipboard operations with Jira Software

A Jira Software Case Study

Mercy Ships brings healthcare and hope to underserved communities with the help of Atlassian

Mercy Ships is a nonprofit that operates hospital ships to deliver free medical care and rebuild healthcare infrastructure in some of the poorest parts of sub‑Saharan Africa. Running a floating hospital and mini‑city for 450+ international volunteers creates huge operational complexity—supply chain, staffing, compliance and scattered information across multiple systems—which hindered efficient care and coordination.

By implementing an integrated Atlassian stack—Confluence as a central intranet, Jira Software and Jira Service Management for workflows and requests, and Opsgenie/Statuspage for alerting and incident communication—Mercy Ships centralized knowledge, automated alerts, and routed work to the right teams. The result: much faster incident detection and response, higher staff satisfaction (customer scores rose from 42 to nearly 49), improved scalability and collaboration, and continued delivery of impactful services (over 2,000 surgeries and 20,000+ dental procedures annually).
