Illumina, a San Diego–based leader in genomics whose mission is to improve human health by unlocking the power of the genome, needed to scale and speed development of software and cloud platforms that let customers analyze sequencing data. Coordinating requirements, development, testing and approvals across teams in the US, UK, Canada and Singapore created bottlenecks that slowed time to market and increased costs.

Illumina implemented Jira Software Data Center and Confluence Data Center to manage requirements, projects, documentation and approvals—creating MRDs in Confluence, transposing them into Jira projects, and preserving design history files as permanent records. The tools cut days from the development process, reduced time and cost, enabled broader adoption across non‑engineering teams (including marketing), and now about 2,000 employees use Jira and Confluence for collaboration and tracking.
