How the IT Department at Arizona State University is using agile practices and data to impact the future of higher education

Arizona State University’s University Technology Office (UTO) needed to scale and modernize IT to support the school’s Universal Learning and Smart Cities ambitions. The existing, siloed project management tool was costly and limited usability across hundreds of teams and roughly 1,800 users, so the CIO launched an agile transformation to increase capacity, collaboration, and responsiveness.

UTO adopted the Atlassian suite (Jira, Confluence, Trello, Bitbucket) plus Tempo to standardize templates, onboard teams, track time and billing, and improve reporting. The new workflow reduced silos, enabled data-driven capacity planning and better work–life balance, and spread rapidly across technical and non‑technical departments—positioning IT as a strategic, metrics-driven leader for the university.
