How PTC created the IKEA Place app using Trello

PTC’s TWNKLS | AR team partnered with IKEA to solve a common retail problem: customers couldn’t easily tell if furniture would fit in their homes. Faced with a nine-week window to launch an AR app alongside Apple’s ARKit and the added complexity of multiple distributed partners using different tools, PTC needed to move fast while coordinating development, QA, and cross-organizational communication.

PTC standardized collaboration with Trello (alongside Jira for issue tracking), creating boards for roadmapping, current assignments, and QA and using Power‑Ups to integrate Google Drive, Slack, and more. The result: the IKEA Place app shipped quickly, gained early acclaim (demoed by Tim Cook), and grew to 4+ million downloads, ~100k near-five-star reviews and 18 awards. Internally, Trello drove a 20–40% increase in roadmap throughput, an 85% drop in total issues, and a 125%+ improvement in issue‑fix performance.
