A Jira Software Case Study
Be The Match, operated by the nonprofit National Marrow Donor Program, is the world’s largest DNA registry with about 30 million potential donors and develops software for transplant centers to match donors with patients. Its engineering teams were hampered by disparate homegrown and one-off vendor tools that created duplicate work and limited visibility across engineering, business owners, and leadership.
The organization adopted Jira and then the full Atlassian stack — Bitbucket, Bamboo, and Confluence — to track and coordinate concurrent projects, implement CI/CD, enforce granular access controls for HIPAA compliance, and integrate documentation and code management. This unified platform sped development, enabled a major initiative to modernize and unify legacy search systems, aligned teams across the US and Europe, and improved the efficiency, speed, and quality of donor-matching applications that help clinicians deliver life-saving transplants.
