Case Study: Austrian Federal Railways achieves end-to-end traceability and a robust ticketing system with Jira Software

A Jira Software Case Study

Preview of the Austrian Federal Railways Case Study

Austrian Federal Railways uses Atlassian across engineering, IT, and business

Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB), which employs over 40,000 people and serves about 459 million passengers and 111 million tons of cargo annually, needed a highly reliable ticketing system across web, mobile, machines, conductors and travel agents. Development teams were using Polarion, Jenkins, SVN and Git but lacked visibility and efficient reporting across the build process, hampering traceability and delivery speed.

Engineering migrated to Atlassian—Confluence for requirements, Jira for tracking, Bitbucket for source control and Bamboo for CI—establishing end-to-end traceability and streamlined workflows. The platform scaled across the organization (28,000 Jira users, 320 projects, 88,500 issues; 1,400 Confluence users and 22,000+ pages; 50,000+ Bitbucket commits), enabling faster, more transparent development and a more powerful ticketing system for ÖBB’s passengers.
