Atlassian helps Mercy Ships deliver free life-changing healthcare to developing nations

Mercy Ships is an international NGO that operates the world’s largest civilian hospital ship, delivering free, life‑changing surgeries to developing nations with 1,200 staff and volunteers (about 400 aboard the Africa Mercy). Coordinating global teams, shipping containers of medical supplies, rotating medical staff and onboard services across multiple continents was hampered by email, disparate systems and paper‑based processes.

To fix this, Mercy Ships implemented Atlassian tools—Confluence (the “Navigator”), Jira Software, Jira Service Desk, HipChat and Bamboo—to centralize documentation, track containers and medical supplies, manage projects and automate development. The change improved coordination and communication across ship and shore, ensured the right supplies arrive at the right place and time, supported integrated app development, and saved funds via Atlassian community licenses that could be redirected to life‑saving surgeries.
