A Jira Software Case Study
Amgen, a leading biotechnology company in Thousand Oaks, CA, adopted a scaled agile approach (SAFe with customizations) to coordinate 10–15 distributed teams on large projects like predictive cancer-treatment software. The company needed a shared language and a central place to document new terminology, roles, responsibilities, and requirements to keep teams aligned and provide full project visibility.
Amgen standardized on Jira terminology and used Confluence to capture and review architecture and business requests; accepted items become Jira epics that are prioritized, broken into stories, and scheduled into sprints. This approach produced enterprise-wide transparency—epics and sprint forecasts are visible to everyone (including top management), non-technical stakeholders can access clear reports, and automated updates keep watchers informed—resulting in improved predictability and 360-degree visibility.
