BMW, a leading luxury automaker, sought to address the primary concerns of prospective electric vehicle buyers: range anxiety and finding charging stations. The company tasked its vendor, INRIX, with developing a new navigation system that could accurately show a vehicle's available range and also integrate public transit alternatives for when traffic or low charge prevented a journey.
INRIX developed the industry's first in-car EV Range Finder and Intermodal Navigation system for BMW. The solution provided accurate range estimates based on traffic and topography, located charging stations, and offered public transit alternatives during delays. As a result of this innovation, BMW successfully launched the i3 vehicle with these features, experiencing significant sales increases, including outselling a key competitor by 70% in one month.
