Reconnecting families through SMS and USSD services

Refunite, a technology non-profit operating a global online family-tracing database of more than 400,000 users, faced the challenge of reaching refugees and displaced people who lack internet access. To make the service available where there is no data connectivity, Refunite partnered with Infobip to use Infobip’s SMS and USSD services so users could search the database and receive notifications from basic mobile phones.

Infobip implemented SMS and USSD connectivity through its operator partnerships, acting as a single provider to ensure coverage and real-time menu-driven searches. As a result, Refunite’s platform is now accessible via SMS/USSD in DR Congo, Jordan and Turkey (with Somalia, South Sudan and the Philippines in the pipeline), proving the solution reliable and practical for reconnecting separated families.
