VMware used its flagship conference, VMworld, to tackle a strategic challenge: grow and energize its Champions advocate community by increasing recruitment and inspiring more customers to serve as references. The goal was to create an unforgettable on-site experience that would drive sign-ups, engagement and advocacy for future programs and events.

VMware made Champions a one-stop VMworld experience with pre-event targeting, VIP on-site treatment (a dedicated lounge, contests and leaderboards, Champion-led sessions, and on-site interviews), and post-event follow-up through AdvocateHub. The effort delivered clear results: 508 new advocates (86 recruited by existing Champions), 426 engaged advocates, 7,332 activity completions (1,152 in a single day), 15 on-site interviews, 75 references, 9 testimonial videos, and 31 advocates interested in speaking at VMworld 2019.
