University College London captures real-time insights from 38 families with Indeemo

University College London (UCL) faced an unprecedented research challenge when the COVID-19 pandemic began. Their team, led by Dr. Humera Iqbal, needed to capture real-time data on how the pandemic was reshaping family life, but traditional ethnographic methods like in-person interviews and school recruitment were no longer possible. They required a quick, ethical, and rigorous method to study multiple generations within households and build a comparative international evidence base for policymakers.

UCL implemented Indeemo's digital ethnography platform to conduct a longitudinal, multi-modal diary study. The solution enabled the remote capture of in-the-moment photo, video, and text data from 72 participants across 38 UK families, with international partners replicating the study in 10 countries. Using Indeemo, the team gathered rich, emotional insights through video, responded to live events with flash tasks, and achieved a diverse sample. The results included one of the most detailed records of UK family life during the pandemic, robust data for academic publication, and a comparative evidence base used to inform policy.
