Employee Engagement and Idea Crowdsourcing

The City of Ottawa used its 2009 Employee Engagement Survey to pinpoint areas needing improvement—interaction with supervisors, managing workload, organizational value and career growth—and needed a scalable way to involve staff in identifying practical solutions to boost engagement and performance.

In April 2010 the Organizational Performance and Development group partnered with Ascentum to launch the Share Your Ideas pilot on IdeaScale, pairing concise issue booklets with an easy online idea-submission, commenting and voting platform. The pilot achieved over 80% participation and averaged more than one idea per employee; top-voted ideas were forwarded to the City’s Service Excellence team for implementation.
