Department Of Veterans Affairs - Customer Case Study

The Department of Veterans Affairs launched the Employee Innovation Challenge in March 2010 to crowdsource ideas from its 309,000 employees on improving efficiency and service. Using the IdeaScale platform, the VA faced a rapid 72-hour launch window and the need for a highly scalable system to handle traffic and submissions across the nation’s second-largest federal agency.

IdeaScale enabled a fast, scalable rollout and peer-driven idea ranking that cut review costs and increased engagement—nearly 45,000 employees participated over four weeks, submitting and voting on 6,552 ideas. The top ideas (75 employee-ranked plus 25 executive-selected) moved to a judging panel with a goal of funding 25 initiatives, demonstrating strong employee involvement, executive visibility, and practical pathways to improvement.
