The USA Science & Engineering Festival is the nation’s largest celebration of STEM, a biennial expo that draws hundreds of thousands to Washington, D.C. As a nonprofit with a small marketing team, the festival faced limited resources and the challenge of connecting with a wide, diverse audience—students, teachers, sponsors, influencers, and families—while building momentum for its flagship Expo.
By adding social media to their marketing mix and managing campaigns with Hootsuite (using lists, streams, scheduling, and cross-network monitoring), the team amplified outreach, engaged sponsors and Science “celebrities,” and supported nationwide promotional events. The results: attendance grew 63% (from 200,000 in 2012 to 325,000 in 2014), the festival reached roughly 114 million on Twitter over the 3-day event, and the branded #SciFest hashtag exposed more than 44 million people during the festival weekend.
