Case Study: Radio Perusia achieves rapid, organized emergency alerts to keep citizens safe with Hootsuite

A Hootsuite Case Study

Preview of the Radio Perusia Case Study

How an Italian Radio Station used Hootsuite to Keep Citizens Safe During a Devastating Flood

Radio Perusia, the National Civil Protection’s web radio in Perugia, stepped up during April 2014 when severe rains and spring melts caused the Tiber to flood central Italy, displacing hundreds of thousands and exposing gaps in how emergency information was organized and distributed. With many residents turning to social media for real‑time updates, the station needed a way to collect, verify and share timely information across audiences.

Using Hootsuite, Radio Perusia set up keyword search streams and influence filters to monitor official accounts, regional hashtags and journalists, then aggregated and redistributed updates across its channels. Over four days the station posted 116 Tweets that generated nearly 10,000 retweets, connected live with national media figures, and helped keep civilians safe, calm and well informed—establishing Radio Perusia as a trusted emergency information source.
