Banco Santander Prepares for a 5G Future With Hitachi Vantara and Telefónica

Telefonica needed to demonstrate 5G leadership and support a Banco Santander proof of concept that would let bank branches adopt faster, low‑latency access to “hot” data without maintaining local storage infrastructure. To meet this challenge, Telefonica worked with Hitachi Vantara, using Hitachi Content Platform (HCP) and HCP Anywhere Edge to provide cloud‑connected, edge storage that could exploit 5G performance and low latency.

Hitachi Vantara deployed HCP Anywhere Edge in six weeks and linked it to HCP object storage, delivering a 500 TB edge cache with an initial 2 PB backend and fiber backup. The solution eliminated local branch storage, cut storage management and maintenance costs, delivered unlimited scalability, and enabled two Santander branches near Madrid to become among the first in Europe connected by 5G—unlocking new business opportunities and simplifying centralized data protection and growth.
