How New Software can Make a Self-Checkout Blazingly Fast

The telecommunications company Telia faced the challenge of creating a novel and modern shopping experience for its new flagship store. They wanted to revolutionize the traditional self-checkout process to make it significantly faster and more seamless for customers, thereby reducing wait times and preventing lost sales. They partnered with the software development company Helmes to develop a new solution.

Helmes implemented a self-checkout system utilizing RFID technology instead of traditional barcodes. The solution involved RFID stickers on products and readers hidden within checkout cupboards, allowing customers to automatically register all their items at once by simply placing them on the surface. This resulted in purchases being completed in as little as 20 seconds. The new system was used two to three times more frequently than regular checkouts, improving customer satisfaction and increasing sales for Telia, which plans to install it in all new Finnish stores.
