Visana Services AG uses SecureWave to protect its IT network

Visana Services AG, one of Switzerland’s largest health and accident insurers with just under 1,500 employees and some 870,000 people covered, needed to prevent malware and data loss from unauthorized mobile devices across its headquarters, regional offices and processing centers. Facing legal and reputational risks from uncontrolled USBs, PDAs, cameras and wireless adapters, Visana sought a way to centrally control which external devices could access its network.

Visana deployed Sanctuary Device Control (SecureWave/Lumension) with 1,350 licenses, implemented by IBV Informatik AG over a six-month rollout. The whitelist-based solution registers device signatures in a central ACL, blocks unapproved devices (USB, FireWire, WLAN, Bluetooth, etc.), and offers auditing and optional shadowing of read/write activity; temporary, admin-issued permissions are also supported. The result was a marked reduction in virus proliferation, stronger data protection and clearer compliance evidence for regulations such as Basel II and Sarbanes-Oxley.
