A Heat Software Case Study
The Nevada Office of Veterans Services (NOVS) is a state agency with seven locations that provides benefits and care to veterans and handles sensitive records, including medical information. As staff became more computer-savvy, NOVS identified a growing risk from unmanaged removable storage (USB drives and external hard drives): Active Directory could not prevent authorized users from copying data or outsiders from introducing malware, creating HIPAA and data-theft concerns.
NOVS deployed Lumension Data Protection on all workstations to enforce a default-deny, whitelist-based policy with granular permissions by user, device model, time and encryption, allowing controlled exceptions when needed. The solution gave NOVS clear visibility and control over removable media, reduced the risk of data theft and malware, supported HIPAA compliance, and required little ongoing administration for the agency’s two-person IT team.
