The Nevada Office of Veterans Services (NOVS) is a state agency with seven locations that provides benefits and care to veterans and handles sensitive records, including medical information. As staff became more computer-savvy, NOVS identified a growing risk from unmanaged removable storage (USB drives and external hard drives): Active Directory could not prevent authorized users from copying data or outsiders from introducing malware, creating HIPAA and data-theft concerns.

NOVS deployed Lumension Data Protection on all workstations to enforce a default-deny, whitelist-based policy with granular permissions by user, device model, time and encryption, allowing controlled exceptions when needed.
