Endo Pharmaceuticals - Customer Case Study

Endo Pharmaceuticals, seeking to diversify beyond its legacy pain-management portfolio and overcome a slowing, incremental R&D model, moved to a semivirtual open-innovation approach and selected partners including HCL to drive early-stage medical device ideation. Endo chose HCL in part for its Engineering Out of the Box (EOOTB) solutions and willingness to establish a long-term center of excellence (COE) as part of a value-based, IP‑focused partnership model.

HCL and other partners implemented a virtual drug- and device-discovery network with COEs and performance‑linked contracts that paid for accepted concepts, not hours, incentivizing breakthrough ideas. The result, as of 2011, was high partner productivity, a vibrant pelvic‑health product pipeline with Endo owning the generated IP, and a scalable innovation platform supported by planned COEs, dedicated program managers and an IT‑enabled alliance management infrastructure — outcomes attributed to HCL’s role in the program.
