Southern Alberta Institute of Technology Measuring their Student Experiences

Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT), a Calgary post‑secondary institution with about 12,500 full‑time and 10,000 part‑time students, needed a simple way to measure student experiences and mental health across campus. In August 2017 SAIT deployed five HappyOrNot Smiley Terminals (in the coffee house, bar, convenience store and student experience office) to collect quick, real‑time feedback by asking students “How are you?”.

Using HappyOrNot’s Smiley Terminals and analytics, SAIT gained comparative, continuous feedback that identified buildings with gaps in support and enabled targeted resource deployment and immediate fixes. The HappyOrNot solution improved student services and campus atmosphere, supported active mental‑health monitoring, increased revenue by resolving issues early, and allowed SAIT to reinvest that revenue back into student services.
