A HackerRank Case Study
WePay, a payments platform that enables more than 1,000 online platforms (including GoFundMe and Meetup) to embed branded payments, needed to scale engineering quickly — hiring 18–20 developers in four months and 10 interns in two weeks. With a two-person recruiting team and engineers swamped by technical phone screens and on-site interviews, WePay struggled with high candidate fail rates and excessive resume “noise” that threatened product delivery timelines.
By adopting HackerRank’s automated coding assessments, WePay screened far more applicants in less time, cutting preliminary phone-screen time (45 minutes per screen across 90 candidates) and saving 67 hours overall. The tests produced a 50% drop-off of unqualified applicants, reduced resume noise by 94%, identified the top 6% of candidates by code quality for on-site interviews, recovered engineering productivity, and helped increase gender diversity in the engineering team to 50% women.
